Cutting Your Own Tree

From the moment you enter our farm we have everything you need to have a great time and find the perfect tree. Walk in, choose what direction to go to find the type of tree you want, grab a saw and sled and you are on your way! Feel free to cut any size tree to the size you want – if you see a 12 foot tree and only want the top 8 feet – cut it there! We can use the remaining greens for wreaths and other products. We do our best not to let anything go to waste.

What type of tree should I choose?

We have 12 different varieties of trees to choose from. Some are soft with delicate branches and others are more prickly with firm branches and of course everything in between! If you have a lot of heavy ornaments we recommend choosing something with a stiffer branch, such as a spruce tree, while if you want something with a lot of fragrance we might recommend a variety of fir tree.  Check out more information on the many varieties we have here:

What do I do once I have chosen and cut my tree?

Once you have found and cut your tree you bring it back to the main entrance. Here you will pay for your tree. We then offer to shake (gets the old needles out), drill (puts a small hole in the base if you have a specialized “pin” stand) and bale your tree (makes it easier to get home, in the house and on the stand.) All of these services are included in the price of the tree. We even offer free twine if needed to tie it on your car.  We apologize but due to insurance limitations we cannot tie your tree on your car.

Live Trees

We also have a selection of potted trees if you prefer to cutting. These can be planted in your yard or donated to a local charity for them to plant after the Christmas season.  After Christmas we recommend you leave your tree in a cool spot (like a damp basement) until the danger of frost has passed. When you bring a tree into a warm house it begins to think it is spring and will continue to grow. If you then plant it outside during a cold winter the new growth will be killed off for that year. The tree will continue to grow in future years as normal but you may lose the first year of growth.

How do I keep my tree fresh as long as possible?

We strongly recommend you get your tree into water right away upon arriving home. If you must wait to put up your tree we recommend you put it in a bucket of water (where it won’t freeze) or cut a small slice off the bottom immediately prior to putting it up in your stand. Just remember you cannot cut anything off the bottom if your tree was drilled for a pin stand. When you cut a tree it essentially opens a wound which then attempts to “heal” by covering itself with sap. This layer of sap prevents water uptake and decreases the length of time your tree will stay fresh.

We also have found good results with using hot water, at least initially, when putting your tree in the stand. This helps melt the sap layer that will form and increase water uptake.

The MOST important thing in keeping your tree fresh as long as possible is WATER, WATER, WATER. Never let your tree go dry. It will drink more in the first few days and weeks so check it daily. It may slow down after that so you may find you only need to check every other day.

How do I dispose of my tree when I am done with it?

There are so many environmentally sound ways to dispose of your tree. Whether you use it in your pond as a fish habitat, donating it to a goat farm for snacking, leaving it out for the wildlife to eat or chipping it for mulch, there are many ways to re-purpose your tree once you are done with it. You can also bring it back to us, if that is convenient, and we will chip it for mulch on our potted trees.
